Has there ever been an SUV/Truck/Non-Car that has APPRECIATED in value?

A lot of discussion today about car values, appreciation, etc, got me thinking: Is there an SUV/Wagon/Pickup equivalent to a Ford GT or Porsche GT3? (As in, after you adjust for inflation, it is worth more than its initial MSRP after 25+ years?)

SVT something? G-Wagen? AMG anything? Anything made by International? Speculation about the CTS-V Wagon or E63 Wagon? Range Rovers? Anything at all?

Or is it just impossible because A) These types of vehicles rarely have "true" sporting pretensions (as in, there won't be a motorsport connection like with a Ford GT or Porsche GT3)?

Or is it because they're physically large, and "big" cars usually depreciate really badly? (Think large sedans, Bentley Continentals, VW Phaeton although the badge also comes into play there.) Why is this? Is it the perception that big = more parts = more costly to fix?

nope, they are expensive, but only finely rebuilt ones are fetching close to MSRP or over these days

These (well restored) 40's go from anywhere between 20 grand up to and beyond 60 grand.

(inflation adjusted MSRP $23,000)

The LM002 almost qualifies.

Kinja'd!!!

US MSRP was purportedly $134,000, and a really nice one sold a while back for ~122. Most sell for less than $100k, though.

Edit: obviously inflation isn't counted there.

Sure. There are some classics out there like the original Power Wagons and classic Willies Jeeps that are worth more than new. Well done 60s and 70s era Ford and Chevy restorations bring good money as well.

Are we only defining appreciation as cars that have gone above MSRP? I was just thinking cars whose value has increased faster than inflation after a period of depreciation (which I'm not sure applies to the Wagoneer either).

I actually went looking for info on that. MSRP was 134k in the US, less in some other places, and a really nice one went for 122k a while back, but most or all don't meet MSRP. Definitely not after inflation. They didn't depreciate too badly, though.

Can you explain more? I don't know much about these. Is it a Land Cruiser? What generations are worth a lot, and why?

I've seen both LHD and RHD versions of these; would one from Japan be worth more for some reason?

Land cruiser FJ40 (1960-1984).

The 84 is valuable because it gets the 5 speed and 2F engine.

Anything newer than 76 with disc brakes is a good buy.

I don't think it makes a huge difference RHD vs LHD since all the stuff you would want from JDM was available here or in Canada. The trick is getting one without rust, with relatively low miles or fully restored. Even rusty heaps can fetch a couple of grand.

the did depreciate quite a bit, but they were hugely expensive for the time they were produced. 29,000 was the price in 1991 for a base model, which inflates to around 50K now. Now only the absolute finest examples with tons of resto work on an otherwise super low mileage shell go for that if people are paying Wagonmaster full nut on every copy he puts out

There's a shop up the road from where I work that specializes in full Bronco restorations, I stopped in one day and asked about prices, I figured in the 15-25k range for one of theirs.

Turns out most of theirs sell for 40+.

What exactly is the Lil Red Express? Is that a trim level of a D Series, a separate model, a high-performance variant? What years was it available?

Posts like this make me realize how weird we as car people are. Causally comparing the values of random special edition 50-year-old unicorns off the top of our heads. Who the hell knows this stuff? Why was this answer obvious to us? What does this say to us about us as people? Regardless, it's nice to have a community like OPPO where we can all be weird together

Yes actually, you're pretty right on those counts. It was a high performance variant of a D-series Adventurer Pickup. It was only available for 78 and 79. They came with a high output version of the 360 CID, which basically only had a new intake and cam. The truck itself was a stepside with special dual exhaust stacks, a graphics package, wood trim on the bed, etc. They only made about 7000 of them altogether.

Oh my goodness, those exhausts are stock? Wow. They don't make em like they used to, haha. That's amazing. I bet modern-day emissions regs would faint at the sight of that.

Kinja'd!!! Dingers Ghost, Champion Jockey > MegaSuper
04/13/2015 at 21:13

Oh yeah, they're stock. And even though catalytic converters were required by then, the trucks didn't come with them. There was a loophole they used that allowed a modified version of a previously certified engine to not need to be recertified. And since the purpose of this truck was noise and badassery, the cats were pitched. All for the better. In 78 they were the fastest American Produced vehicle to reach 100 MPH.

Wow. You've made me a believer.

So if you saw one listed in a classic car sales mag or something, what is it actually called? "Dodge D Series w/Lil Red Express" or "Dodge Lil Red Express" or "Dodge Adventurer Lil Red Express" or something else?

Are we talking like $60,000…$100,000? More?

Kinja'd!!! Dingers Ghost, Champion Jockey > MegaSuper

Kinja'd!!!0

Usually they just go by Dodge Lil Red Express.

I'm looking at one right at this moment on Hemmings for $29k, in excellent condition after a full restoration. Buying a brand new one in 1978 would set you back about $7500, but they were most likely sold way over that more often than not, similar to how the Hellcat is today. Adjusted for inflation, that price is about $27k. So honestly if anything, a nice one has actually held it's value. But, at the same time, there only were 7,000 of these trucks. So they are fairly rare.

Ironically your picture appears to be a 3/4 scale copy of the real thing. I forget who makes/made them, but there was a company who at least planned on making kits and possibly planes for sale.
